The Ukrainian city of Lviv has become a popular tourist destination over the past decade, as cheap flights make visiting ever more affordable. Consumption tends to dominate these spaces: people are more likely to get artisan coffee or craft beer than take a stroll or sit on a bench, and many flats have been converted into holiday rentals or co-working spaces.

This blend of conservation and gentrification has had benefits in Lviv, where entire districts stood crumbling and dilapidated until recently. But it has also hollowed out the inner city, making it a lot more crowded, predictable and sterile. My own PhD research in Lviv uncovered a range of conflicts regarding heritage — especially over who gets to shape heritage policies, and to what end.
The architects and conservation professionals I worked with who studied during the Soviet era often lamented the visible presence of consumption in the city today.
Strong buyers abound
The proliferation of coffee shops and hotels should have been controlled, they said, and controversial constructions around the UNESCO site should have been stopped. Like all cities across the former Soviet Union and the Eastern Bloc, Lviv was run in a radically different fashion under state socialism than it is now. Much of the housing stock was in state ownership, and a top-down planning system encompassed everything from economic activities and tourism to conservation.
The Soviet Union is seldom thought of as a champion of heritage conservation, and for a good reason. Historic housing was notoriously unkempt, and protection efforts were concentrated on a select few monumental buildings.

But in some cases, Soviet-era conservation had bigger ambitions than the upkeep of buildings. There were no coffee shops, and hotels were placed around the historic zone, rather than inside it. Meanwhile, countries which are doing well economically, are also turning towards the trade of passports, including New Zealand, United Kingdom and America, in hopes of boosting their economy through funds being poured through their system. While not the cheapest countries to invest in, they each hold their own appeal.
New Zealand has become a popular option for Americans hoping to escape the American dream and Americanized culture, the rolling hills and peaceful country settings of the large country has its appeal. Having being ranked as the least corrupt country in the world is also a selling factor.

Many see New Zealand as a sort of Utopia, an escape from the Western world and its demagoguing political plays. Passports and citizenships have been experiencing a hike in interest in recent years due to the economic stability and political unrest. BBC reports that the events of Brexit has further fueled the interest in second citizenships, and even the US Presidential election has been giving American citizens doubts about staying in the country.
From 1, the previous year in November to 17, in November the following year. Current affairs definitely drive an impact in the interest that second citizenship is receiving.
